BANDIN BELLY

In this short video, Rosamond S. King’s poetry and Oliver’s improvisational dance combine to express the Caribbean term “bandin’ belly” or “band yu belly,” which traditionally refers to people in mourning or experiencing extreme suffering, and resonates with the 21st century African Diaspora’s experiences of police and other state violence. King and Oliver’s work is amplified by composer/improvisor Jason Finkelman’s music and environmental sounds. Bandin’ Belly was filmed in Crystal Lake Park, Urbana IL by Finkelman.
